So I went to New York City this morning for the Gibson guitar press conference. They hyped a huge announcement that was going to change the guitar as we know it. Awesome!!! A new body style? Maybe a whole new line of guitars? So what is this announcement!?! I must know!!! This is Gibson, if you say the name… Even if you don’t play guitar you know who they are and what they do. They are the masters of craftsmanship… This is going to be epic!!!
Surprise!!! It’s a $6000 computer. Uh… excuse me? Yep you heard me… A Fracking $6000 computer!!! This monstrosity is a basically a Gibson Firebird with a CPU installed for self-tuning and one touch effects control\tuning. No word if it’s Rock Band compatible… Yet. Now don’t get me wrong, the technology being used is very impressive. The problem is, this is not what a guitar is… That thing has no soul, and it’s already been done!!! Maybe that’s why many reporters took a pass halfway through the presser. No interest in a Gibson keyboard, huh?
The Gibson Flying V ( often imitated never duplicated) is the apex of attitude and style while maintaining it’s class. In 2008 Gibson introduced the robot V. The guitar was equipped with a CPU that could automatically tune the guitar.
It was to be a ground breaking design. Just 2 years later it has already fallen into obscurity.
More than any other instrument, the guitar is a chemistry set. Once you begin including pedals, pickups and the millions of modifications you can do to a guitar, no guitar sounds the same!!! That’s the beauty of them. Learning to play and fix your guitar is part of the journey and fun of learning. It’s a Rock n Roll lightsaber!!! Stick to what you do Gibson… Creating masterpieces people WANT to play!!!
