Hey gang, it’s November 2nd… Election day!!! Without getting too preachy, I wanted to bring something to your attention. The Supreme Court has decided they will hear an argument that would allow the regulation of video games. Currently video games are protected by the first amendment, same as books, music and movies. Now if politicians have their way, the games we love like Gears of War, Fallout, and even Halo will become very hard to acquire, if they’re even made at all. Now this isn’t anything new, but the precedent they could set would be.
This most recent attempt at censorship has a very strange flag bearer… The California Governor. That’s right, Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law written by Senator Leland Yee back in 2005 that would ban the sale of violent video games. After being waived twice within the courts, their attempted sanction once again finds it’s case being heard. Now given this mans history, this is hypocrisy at its highest. Wonder how he’d feel if one of his blockbusters were going to be banned before it was released?
Fortunately groups like the comic book legal defense fund, and the video game voters network are not standing idly by while our freedoms are being threatened under the guise of protection. Today they will be with others as they defend our freedom of choice in Washington!!! You must do your part to hold the line. Talk about this… Read about this…Write about this!!! Make your voices heard. Don’t forget… We elect them – They Work for us!!!
Nazi book burnings, the 1940’s comic book trials, various book bannings, the PMRC hearings, etc… Sad that we keep repeating this lesson, Those who forget the past…
