When I first heard there was going to be a Nikita T.V. series my thought was… Oh… No. I was a fan of the original Luc Besson: La Femme Nikita movie and American remake, Point of no Return staring Bridget Fonda. Problem is… This is going to be on the WB!!! Historically the WB’s been a ridiculous “cookie cutter” network for my taste. My mind instantly filled with visions of, Beverly Hills 90210 with guns. Never the less, I decided to watch the first episode. If nothing else I’d have a few laughs at how bad this show is. So as the pilot begins, credits rolling, a name catches my attention, executive producer McG. OK… If nothing else this should be a fun ride with a lot of cool stunts. Well… The first episode was surprisingly good. The plot was tight and had legs (No I’m not talking about Maggie Q’s… They are nice though… Very nice!!!), but there’s no way this can KEEP being good. First episode was a fluke, it’s on the WB!!!
After the second episode, It didn’t get stupid. In fact, the plot is very slick. It’s smart enough to keep you guessing, and the characters are building nice foundations individually. Maggie Q’s Nikita is very driven in her quest. That same drive may compromise her in future episodes. Typically, performers that do primarily action pieces aren’t good actors. Maggie is emerging as anything BUT typical. Not only can she kick ass but she can act it off as well!!! (As in she can “act her ass off” Come on kids; keep up.) There is a solid conflict with Nikita and Division (her former employer), that makes the story move and gives it tension.
Xander Berkley plays Percy, the director of Divison. Every hero needs a villian, and Xander is one of the best on T.V. right now!!! Shane West is Nakita’s former handler Michael, who is more than a little upset with his former protege. Melinda Clarke plays Amanda, the recruit’s psychologist and etiquette tutor; A very persuasive lady. For comic relief Aaron Stanford is the smart ass hacker, Birkhoff. Rounding out the cast are the Recruits Thom (Ashton Holmes), Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca), and her rival Jaden (Tiffany Hines). Alex is Nikita’s inside operative. Think Jack Bauer and Chloe from 24…Wait a minute!!! Here we go!!! When do Brenda and Dillon show up as recruits!?! They don’t!!! Matter of fact, the recruits would probably kill them if they did!!!
9 episodes in and the series has proven itself strong, with a good cast. The overall plot is emerging at a nice pace that keeps surprising. Look, I wanted to smash it… But I can’t. It’s good… Damn good!!! If you’re a fan of action, you’re depriving yourself from not watching this. McG has created a nice formula for producing smart and entertaining action television. As seen with Chuck, Supernatural, and last years Human Target. By the way set your Tivos and DVRs because Mark Valley, Chi McBride, and Jackie Earle Haley are back for season two of Human Target November 17th on FOX!!! But that, is another story…
